fuck you, dad
today my dad and i went christmas shopping. it all began as an innocent trip to the glendale galleria many years ago. now i am 25 and it has morphed into a ridiculous tradition that somehow marches on.
my dad watches a lot of fox news. whenever im at his house and he's not there, i flip on the television and its always on fox news. my dad is intelligent, and pretty open minded, considering his mom is openly racist (but racist in a polite way, if that makes any sense. its the kind of racism that develops when one associates with other skin colors mostly through the television.) the thing about fox news is that it polarizes your mind. it makes you think in black and white, which wouldn't be a problem if it weren't for all the fucking COLORS in the real world, not to mention those pesky shades of grey.
so anyway, my dad assumes that i am a "liberal" because i went to berkeley and i think pre-emptive war isn't a healthy foreign policy. i have a hard time understanding this, because while i don't identify with any one political party, if i absolutely had to pick one it would be the libertarian one, and HE VOTES LIBERTARIAN.
why can't he see that his son shares a lot of assumptions with him? just because i happen to disaggree with him on a lot of issues (as i should, being his bratty kid and all) doesn't mean we are in different worlds. but fox news sets the world up in camps.
CAMP 1) us
CAMP 2) everybody else
due to the fact that i disagree with my dad on a lot of stuff and due to the fact that he is being hypnotized by the television into the world of black and white, he assumes that i am a card-carrying member of the "everybody else" camp, and i must agree with what "everybody else" thinks, which is whatever fox news thinks THEY think. whatever.
so fuck you, dad. im sure there was a time when we could have had an honest discussion, but you have grown old and lazy and you cant invest the time or effort to listen to me with any kind of respect. i do my best to hear you out and respond to your points, but you don't return the favor. i don't want to talk politics with you anymore.
